Russian-German geographer, meteorologist, climatologist and botanist who, after studies in St. Petersburg, spent the bulk of his life and career in Germany and Austria. The climate classification system named after his 1884 proposal remains widely used with modifications, and he also coined the name aerology for the science of the upper atmosphere.
