The warming phase of a recurring shift in tropical Pacific sea surface temperature, the oceanic half of the El Nino Southern Oscillation. El Nino events cause short term spikes in global average surface temperature and disrupt normal weather patterns worldwide, bringing intense storms to some places and drought to others.
