A megathrust earthquake that struck Prince William Sound, Alaska, on Good Friday, 27 March 1964, shaking the ground for over four and a half minutes. It remains the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America and the second most powerful recorded worldwide since 1900, and it significantly advanced scientific understanding of subduction zone megathrust earthquakes.
