A silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine used as a gemstone, colorless in its natural state but turned pale blue, golden brown or yellow orange by trace impurities and routinely treated with heat or radiation for deeper colors. It is one of the hardest naturally occurring minerals and defines value 8 on the Mohs hardness scale.
