A fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock made from an original shale-type sedimentary rock of clay or volcanic ash by low-grade regional metamorphism. It is the finest-grained foliated metamorphic rock, and its foliation lies in planes perpendicular to the direction of metamorphic compression rather than along the original bedding, which is why it splits into the flat sheets that roof buildings.
