The area of geology dealing with the distribution and movement of groundwater in the soil and rocks of the Earth's crust, commonly within aquifers. It studies the laws governing subsurface water movement, the mechanical, chemical and thermal interactions of that water with porous solid material, and the transport of energy, chemical constituents and particulate matter by flow; a related applied branch, groundwater engineering, designs wells, pumps and drains.

Facts
Central Question
Hydrogeology is an area of geology specializing in the study of the distribution and movement of groundwater in the soil and rocks of the Earth's crust. 1
Scope
Hydrogeology studies the occurrence, movement and quality of groundwater within aquifers, the saturated rock and sediment layers beneath the land surface. 1
Significance
Hydrogeology guides the siting of water wells, the management of aquifers under drought stress, and the containment of groundwater contamination. 1
Cross-Tradition Connections

Associated With

Groundwater is the subsurface leg of the hydrologic cycle that hydrogeology studies in detail.
